Was Season of the Witch One of Nicolas Cage's Better Movies?

Every once in a while Nicolas Cage will do a really good movie. Unfortunately, that is not the case with Season of the Witch. I won't go as far as say it was a bad movie, it was just average.

Maybe it was the subject witches and how they approached it. I just never did get engaged in this movie. Not to say I wasn't entertained in parts, just overall I didn't really care to be absorbed in the movie, the action or the characters.

The movie was somewhat predictable in that you knew that Cage's co-star buddy was going to die sometime in the film, along with all the other characters in the journey they were taking in the movie.  It was just a matter of when and how. Watching a predictable film usually doesn't bother me, and they did mix it up a little from the normal "save the day" formula, so I am not complaining about that part. If you plan to watch the movie, just expect it to be somewhat predictable.

I didn't think the movie was bad, I just thought the movie was OK.  Glad I got it on Netflix.  Probably wouldn't choose to watch this film again.  Needless to say, it was one of Cage's movies that wasn't very good.

Source Code

I just finished watching a good movie: Source Code. I really enjoyed it. There was a good steady pace to the movie and I found myself both encouraging the character to push the boundaries of the system in, and wishing him to stay on target to complete the mission.  In the end (spoiler alert-kinda) there is a happy ending, and I really like that.

I hadn't really seen any previews for this movie, but the people who had seen it said they liked the movie so I put it on my Netflix queue. This is a good, clean movie that allows you to finish the movie happy.

You could say this movie was a combination of Deja-Vu and Groundhog Day.  A person living a day/event over and over again in the attempt to stop a terrorist attack. While doing so, he falls in love with the girl and saves the day.  Of course there is more to the movie than that, but you don't want me to tell you everything do you?

This isn't a complex movie or plot, as I was able to figure out who the bad guy was from the very beginning of the movie.  But I don't think that was the point of the movie.  I think they wanted you to go through this journey with the main character as he tries to find personal peace and prevent this terrorist attack. And, I personally enjoyed that journey.

If you haven't seen the movie, I recommend it.

I was "Sucker Punch"-ed on this one

Well,  that was quite unexpected.  I wanted to watch Sucker Punch because the style they used for the film intrigued me.  I didn't really know the entire plot, but had the basic idea of what it would be, and so I was interested in seeing it. I was really surprised by how the beginning and ending of the movie went, which doesn't really happen to me very often.

First of all, I thought the beginning of the movie was really dark and sad, which they used to set up the movie and get the main character into the insane asylum. If the movie continued in this vein, I might not have finished the movie; however the movie became mostly a fantasy inside of a fantasy after the first 10-15 minutes.  This is the part of the movie that I liked. From here, you had the kung-fu type action in  this very comic book film technique reminiscent to what you may have seen in the movie/trailers of movies like 300 and Sin City called super-imposition chroma key. I think this movie style can be really effective and cool with the right film. This was definitely a good choice for this movie. Also, the music they used was different but very interesting and fitting to the movie.

Throughout the movie I felt like I knew what was going to happen next but at the same time I wasn't exactly sure of what was going to happen at the end of the film. How did this fantasy world tie into reality? At the end of the movie they let you into the secret that the point of the movie wasn't exactly what they were leading you to believe it was. That was kinda cool, and left me with a little bit of a "Wow."  If you think back through the movie and narrative, similar to what you may have experienced in the 6th Sense, you start to see it. I really liked that part.

Admittedly, this movie is not for everyone because of its dark nature coupled with its fantasy action. If that doesn't intrigue you, don't watch this movie. I might watch this movie again later because I want to catch all the things I missed, but other than satisfying some lingering curiosity, I think once is enough for me on this one.
